Sony’s Playstation Now offers a better subscription package

GEEK DESK

PlayStation Now is Sony’s version of Netflix for games; pay a monthly amount and you get a chance to stream some games directly to your PS3 or PS4. In essence, you can rent a game without having to go through the hassle of going out the door, great when you’re trying to emulate a couch potato.

However, there’s always been one downside for Playstation Now, hamstringing what could otherwise have been a great service: it’s too costly. Right now, a monthly subscription stands at $19.99, while $49.99 is the price for a 3-month subscription. With prices like these, it’s not surprising people are not subscribing to the service; buying a game on the PS4 costs around $75 letting you play it indefinitely. As a result, people often only test out the 7 day trial of the PlayStation now service before heading over to Geekay Games.

Luckily for those ardent couch potatoes, Sony is offering a much cheaper subscription package for PlayStation Now — a 12-month plan for $99.99. Pulling out my dusty calculator, I figured that out to be more than 50% cheaper than the single month plan and, as Sony notes, puts it in Netflix’s territory (something we can look forward to in the Middle East) since it’s around $8 a month. Unfortunately, there is a catch: the offer is only around for a limited time period.

Whether the service will see a sudden upswing in activity is still debatable since not many people streaming games is still quite a niche activity, however, there will be a new catalogue of games added on December 8th, including the original, not-as-broken, Batman Arkham trilogy.
