PlayStation 4.5 “NEO” specs revealed

We are not even midway through the current generation hardware cycle, and the PlayStation 4 is possibly getting an upgrade.  Rumoured “PlayStation 4.5” or “PlayStation 4K” is now confirmed to be internally codenamed as NEO, and has a slew of upgrades that will boost the gaming performance without compromising on the existing PS4 market.

Original PS4 NEO
CPU 8 Jaguar Cores at 1.6 GHz 8 Jaguar Cores at 2.1 GHz
GPU AMD GCN, 18 CUs at 800 MHz Improved AMD GCN, 36 CUs at 911 MHz
Memory 8 GB GDDR5, 176 GB/s 8 GB GDDR5, 218 GB/s

The new specs will reportedly provide a smoother framerate experience as well as 4K output support, but Sony is adamant that developers support both old and new PS4 devices in all their titles rather than split the market into two, or have PS4 NEO-only titles.  Starting from October, all games are required to support both versions of the PS4 — that way, the entire PS4 community gets all the games, with those owning a PS4 NEO simply enjoying a smoother experience provided by the upgraded hardware.  Existing games are not affected by this upgrade unless the developers create a patch to take advantage of the new hardware.

Will you be upgrading to the new NEO?  Let us know in the comments.
