Overwatch Season 5 brings back rewards, vampires and a Halloween shake-up

Overwatch is ending its first year-long story in October, and it’s using a vampire to do it. Season 5: A Grim Doctrine went live on October 6, bringing the new Support hero Doctrine and closing out the Reign of Talon storyline. The game hasn’t attempted a narrative of this scale before. Blizzard describes the Reign of Talon as the first year-long narrative arc in Overwatch history.

Doctrine’s arrival is tied directly to that story. His escape from Grímsvötn alongside Doomfist sets up the final chapter, and the prison is now a playable space. The new Escort map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, is set in an icy Icelandic prison connected to Doctrine’s history with Doomfist. Turning lore locations into maps isn’t new for Overwatch. Building a whole season around one hero’s jailbreak is a more deliberate approach than the series usually takes.

Players have already had a chance to try him. Blizzard presents Doctrine as a vampire-inspired Support with a high skill ceiling who deals damage and heals using a scepter. That hybrid design is common among recent Support heroes, and it tends to make balancing harder. The trial weekend showed the problem. Blizzard says Doctrine won around 58 percent of matches during the September trial, so it cut the attack speed buff from Invigorating Drones from 35 to 30 percent, added a second to Shrouded Momentum’s cooldown, and lowered its damage reduction from 50 to 40 percent. Nerfing a hero before launch is a sensible step. Whether these changes are enough will only become clear once ranked players have spent a few weeks with him.

Doctrine is only one part of the update. Season 5 also changes how several familiar heroes play, and the biggest change is to Sombra. Sombra moves to the Support role and keeps her disruptive identity through a new Cyberspace ability, while Roadhog also gets a rework. Two new Support options in a single season could shake up a role that has stayed relatively stable since the five heroes added in Season 1 earlier this year.

The rest of the season covers cosmetics and live events. Unvaulted Passes bring back Battle Pass rewards from earlier seasons, which should please players who missed older items. A Halloween event, new collaborations and fresh cosmetics will also roll out over the coming weeks. The vampire theme and the Halloween timing were clearly planned together.

The bigger question is what comes after the Reign of Talon ends. Blizzard hasn’t said how it will follow its first long-form story. If Season 5 lands well, players will expect the next arc to match it.
