Scout Motors, the Volkswagen Group’s EV spinoff aiming to recapture the spirit of the classic International Harvester Scout, has revealed its first two models: the Traveler SUV and the Terra truck. These rugged electric vehicles, slated for a 2027 release, blend modern technology with a nostalgic design, and even offer a surprising twist – an optional gas-powered generator for extended range.
A Nod to the Past, a Leap into the Future
Scout Motors is tapping into the enduring appeal of the original International Harvester Scout, an off-road vehicle produced from the early 1960s to the early 1980s. The new EVs, with their boxy silhouettes and prominent grilles, evoke the classic Scout’s adventurous spirit while embracing a modern electric powertrain.
Both the Traveler SUV and Terra truck boast impressive performance specs. They promise a targeted 1,000 pound-feet of torque and a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 3.5 seconds in certain trims. The fully electric versions are expected to offer up to 350 miles of range, while variants equipped with the gas-powered generator, dubbed “Harvester,” aim for more than 500 miles.
Embracing the “Mechanical” in a Digital World
While Scout Motors is embracing electrification, it’s also taking a stand against the trend of overly digitalized vehicle interiors. The Traveler and Terra feature a blend of physical buttons and knobs alongside a central touchscreen, providing a tactile and intuitive user experience.
“Americans have not forgotten how to do things like open a car door, like turn a knob, like pull a switch,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Scout Motors, during the reveal event. This emphasis on “staying functional” sets Scout apart from many modern EVs that rely heavily on touchscreens for most vehicle controls.
Off-Road Ready with Modern Amenities
Built on a body-on-frame chassis with a solid rear axle, the Scout EVs are designed for off-road adventures. They feature front and rear mechanical lockers, ample ground clearance, and the ability to ford nearly 3 feet of water. Despite their rugged capabilities, the vehicles also offer modern amenities like over-the-air software updates and remote diagnostics.
Pricing and Availability
The Scout Traveler and Terra are expected to start under $60,000, with potential for prices as low as $50,000 after incentives. Reservations are now open with a refundable $100 deposit. However, eager customers will need to exercise patience, as production is not scheduled to begin until 2027.
The Harvester: A Range-Extending Solution
The optional gas-powered generator, called Harvester, is a notable feature of the Scout EVs. While it might seem counterintuitive for an electric vehicle, this range-extending solution addresses concerns about charging infrastructure and range anxiety, particularly for those who frequently embark on long journeys or off-road excursions.
