Apple is planning to take on the emerging markets — and people who generally prefer smaller phones — with the iPhone SE, which is an iPhone 6s disguised as an iPhone 5s, lacking a few features and is a more affordable way to be indoctrinated into Apple’s ecosystem.
Xiaomi — everyone’s favourite (and more affordable) iPhone copy — seems to be keen on competing directly with the iPhone SE, should the rumour hold true with the online leaks.
Tentatively called the “Xiaomi Mini”, the device is said to feature a 4.3-inch 720p display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 processor, just like the more premium Xiaomi Mi 5. The Xiaomi Mini is also rumoured to have a 13MP rear camera, a fingerprint sensor at the front, 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage.
The Xiaomi Mini is speculated to retail for CNY 1800, which is roughly $275, which is significantly more affordable than the iPhone SE. We don’t know when — or if — this phone will launch, but if it did, Apple may struggle to compete with Xiaomi, at least in the Chinese market.
