The IFA is well underway in Berlin and as is expected, technology companies from around the world swarm to it, like bees to the comb, to unveil their latest gadgets and gizmos, such as the Samsung Gear S3. Earlier today, Huawei flexed their muscles by unveiling two new mid-tier smartphones: the Huawei Nova and Nova Plus. The smartphones will be the first in a series of smartphones bearing the same name.
Specification wise, both the Nova and Nova Plus smartphones are on the modest-to-flagship side of the spectrum. They’re powered by a Snapdragon 625 chip paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage and include support for an extra 128GB via their MicroSD slots. Both support dual-SIMs (Micro and Nano) and pack a fingerprint reader. Interestingly, both smartphones also feature a USB Type-C port for charging. Both phones will be running Android 6.0, albeit under the Huawei Emui 4.4 interface.
Powering the Nova will be a 3,020 mAh battery while the Nova Plus will have its battery capacity expanded up to 3,340 mAh. The difference in battery sizes can mostly be chalked up to the different screens; the Nova Plus features a sizeable 5.5” FHD display while the Nova features a smaller 5-inch FHD display that boasts a PPI of 443. Huawei stated it’s 35% higher than the iPhone 6s.
For the aspiring photographers out there, the Nova and Nova Plus might be worth your time. While the Nova ships with a 12-megapixel f/2.2 rear-shooter and an 8MP f/2.0 camera up front for taking selfies, the Nova Plus’s rear facing camera maxes out at 16-megapixel and comes with optical image stabilization. It also features an 8 MP front facing camera.
“Huawei recognizes that dynamic consumers demand a device that keeps up with their fast-paced lifestyle. Designed to bring new experiences to life with its incredible performance, stylish design and advanced camera features, the Huawei Nova and Huawei Nova Plus devices are the perfect fit for a generation that lives their life on a smartphone.”
– Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.
The smartphones look aesthetically pleasing, coming in the usual variety of shades and tones most smartphone makers adopt these days: Prestige Gold, Mystic Silver and Titanium Grey. As is usual for Huawei’s mid-tier smartphones, these are based on an aluminum frame.
The Nova and Nova Plus will be available sometime during October in over 50 markets for €399 and €429 respectively.
