YouTube to bring Veo 3 AI video tools to Shorts this summer

YouTube is preparing to integrate its latest AI video generation tool, Veo 3, directly into its Shorts platform later this summer. The move, revealed by CEO Neal Mohan during a keynote at Cannes Lions, signals another step in the company’s broader strategy to deepen its AI capabilities within short-form content.

Currently, Shorts creators have access to Veo 2, an earlier version of the tool that powers features like Dream Screen, which allows users to create custom backgrounds and standalone video clips. With Veo 3, YouTube promises higher-quality visuals and the ability to integrate audio into AI-generated content—though details remain sparse on how these features will function specifically within Shorts. The upgrade could provide creators with more flexible content tools, assuming the user experience aligns with the platform’s fast-paced format.

What remains uncertain is the cost to access these features. At present, creating videos with Veo 3 requires a subscription to Google’s higher-tier AI Pro or AI Ultra plans. Whether YouTube Shorts creators will be granted access under the same terms, or through a different pricing model, hasn’t been clarified. YouTube and Google have yet to comment on how this integration might affect creators at scale, especially those operating without paid AI subscriptions.

Despite these open questions, the inclusion of Veo 3 into Shorts comes as YouTube reports that the platform now averages over 200 billion daily views. That volume underscores the importance of Shorts to YouTube’s content ecosystem and highlights why enhancing it with tools like the Veo 3 AI video generator could be a strategic play. As platforms race to incorporate generative AI into consumer-facing products, YouTube appears keen to position Shorts not just as a destination for quick videos, but also as a testing ground for new AI-driven creative tools.

If successful, the rollout could redefine how short-form content is produced and consumed, though much depends on execution and how creators respond to the changes.
