WhatsApp rolls out tools to curb chat exports and AI usage

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature aimed at giving users more control over how their conversations are shared and used. Called Advanced Chat Privacy, the update introduces a set of restrictions that can prevent others from exporting chats, automatically downloading shared media, or using your messages for AI-driven features inside the app. The feature is currently being distributed globally and may take some time to appear for all users.

To activate these controls, users will need to ensure they’re on the latest version of WhatsApp. Once updated, the option can be found by opening a one-on-one or group chat, tapping the name at the top of the screen, and scrolling down to locate Advanced Chat Privacy, just below the Lock Chat option. While the feature doesn’t appear universally just yet, it’s expected to reach all users over the coming weeks.

The introduction of Advanced Chat Privacy marks a subtle shift in how WhatsApp is approaching data control—moving from encryption and access restrictions to actively limiting how conversations can be exported or reused. While users have long been able to back up or email their chat histories, this new setting makes such actions less straightforward for others trying to export someone else’s conversations.

However, it’s important to temper expectations. This setting doesn’t prevent all forms of chat extraction. Anyone determined to keep a record of messages can still take screenshots or manually download media. The update effectively removes some of the convenience tools for data export, but it can’t stop all workarounds. WhatsApp’s framing of this feature as the “first version” of Advanced Chat Privacy suggests that more robust tools might follow, though how effective those will be remains to be seen.

The timing of the update follows a broader wave of changes to WhatsApp’s user experience. Recent additions include visibility into who’s online in a group chat, refined group notification settings, and a document scanning tool for iPhone users. While these features are aimed at making WhatsApp more functional, Advanced Chat Privacy reflects a growing demand for more granular control over privacy in messaging apps—particularly as platforms begin integrating AI tools that rely on user data.

For users who regularly share sensitive information or simply prefer tighter boundaries on how their chats can be reused, this new privacy setting could be a meaningful step. It’s not a foolproof defense against data misuse, but it does add a layer of friction that might deter casual attempts to export or repurpose private conversations.
