WhatsApp is giving users more creative control over their status updates with a new suite of customization tools set to roll out in the coming months. Designed to enhance how people express themselves within the platform’s 24-hour disappearing posts, these updates bring familiar features from Instagram and Facebook Stories into the WhatsApp ecosystem—albeit with a few twists.
Among the key additions is a new “Layout” feature that allows users to create collages using up to six photos. These can be arranged in customizable formats and shared as a single status update, offering a more dynamic way to share moments without flooding contacts with separate uploads.
Music, already available for status since March, is getting a functional upgrade. WhatsApp will now let users turn music clips into stickers, letting a short song snippet serve as a visual and audio overlay on a photo or video. These clips can run up to 15 seconds when paired with images or 60 seconds when used with videos. For those who prefer a simpler option, songs can also be shared as standalone status updates.
Another new addition is the “Add Yours” sticker, which encourages engagement by prompting viewers to reply to a status with their own photos. It’s a social prompt that echoes interactive stickers used on other Meta platforms and adds a participatory element to what’s typically a passive viewing experience.
Users will also gain the ability to convert photos into resizable, repositionable stickers—offering more flexibility in visual storytelling and potentially ushering in more creative, meme-style status updates.
These updates reflect WhatsApp’s continued shift toward richer, more expressive content formats while staying within the app’s privacy-focused framework. Statuses remain visible only to selected contacts and expire after 24 hours, giving users room for spontaneity without the pressure of permanence.
Meta says the new features will begin rolling out soon, with broader availability across Android and iOS expected over the coming months.
