TikTok takes on messaging apps with new group chat feature

TikTok is stepping up its social game by introducing group chats, challenging established messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messages. Now you can gather your squad of up to 32 friends for shared viewing, commenting, and reactions on videos, all within the TikTok app.

This move signifies TikTok’s ambition to become more than just an entertainment platform. It wants to foster deeper connections and facilitate conversations among friends, making it a hub for social interaction.

As with individual messages, group chats are only accessible to users over 15. TikTok has implemented additional safety measures for teens aged 16 and 17. Mutual followers are a prerequisite for joining group chats, and teens creating groups must review and approve new members.

Creating a group chat is easy: tap the “Chat” button in your inbox, select “More options,” choose your friends, and hit “Start group chat.” Joining an existing group is just as simple: tap the invite and click “Join group.”

Adding to the fun, TikTok is rolling out custom stickers for direct messages. This feature encourages creativity and personalization, allowing users to design and share their own unique stickers within chats.

Overall, these new features demonstrate TikTok’s commitment to evolving beyond a platform for passive entertainment.It’s actively building a space for meaningful social interaction and self-expression, keeping users engaged and connected within its ecosystem.
