OpenAI is preparing to launch a new Study Together mode for ChatGPT, offering users a more interactive tutoring experience designed to support learning and critical thinking rather than simply providing answers.

The feature, spotted by some ChatGPT Plus users, appears under the Tools section within the prompt composer, listed alongside Deep Research mode. While not yet available for widespread use, its emergence suggests OpenAI is actively testing the capability ahead of a broader rollout.

What is ChatGPT Study Together?

Unlike the traditional ChatGPT model, which primarily answers user prompts, Study Together flips the dynamic. The mode is designed to ask users targeted questions, guiding them towards solutions and encouraging active engagement with material, similar to how a human tutor might support problem-solving and comprehension.

The approach contrasts with earlier uses of ChatGPT in education, where students often leveraged the AI to generate answers or complete assignments, raising concerns about academic integrity. Study Together aims to transform the AI from a tool that facilitates shortcuts into a platform that supports genuine learning outcomes.

Why AI tutoring matters

The launch of Study Together aligns with a broader shift in AI development towards educational applications. Rivals like Google and Anthropic have already rolled out similar features in recent months:

  • Google’s LearnLM model assists students with homework, while Gemini for Education brings AI capabilities into Google Workspace for Education platforms.
  • Anthropic’s Claude Learning Mode offers guided study sessions, and the company has partnered with institutions under its Claude for Education program to deploy AI tutors in academic settings.

These initiatives are a response to the dual reality of AI in education: while AI makes cheating easier than ever, it also holds the potential to enhance learning by offering personalised, scalable tutoring solutions.

How will it work?

While full details are not yet confirmed, screenshots suggest Study Together will operate as an interactive learning companion. Instead of writing essays or solving equations on behalf of students, it will prompt them with questions, hints, and clarifying follow-ups, fostering deeper understanding and retention.

This pedagogical approach could be beneficial for:

  • School and university students needing structured guidance outside class hours.
  • Professionals and lifelong learners tackling new technical or conceptual skills.
  • Parents seeking AI-assisted revision tools for their children without encouraging shortcuts.

Cost and rollout

At present, there is no confirmed release date or pricing information for the Study Together mode. However, it is expected that, like many advanced ChatGPT features, it may become part of the ChatGPT Plus subscription or future education-specific pricing tiers.

OpenAI’s move into AI tutoring is both strategic and competitive, positioning ChatGPT alongside Google’s and Anthropic’s educational offerings. As AI continues to integrate into classrooms and study routines worldwide, tools like Study Together could shape the future of student support, learning accessibility, and personalised education.

For now, users eager to try Study Together will need to wait for OpenAI’s broader rollout. The feature is still in limited testing, and some UI elements may have been released prematurely during development.
