OpenAI reportedly working on social media platform to rival X and Instagram

OpenAI is reportedly developing a new social media platform with features similar to X (formerly Twitter), according to a report from The Verge. While still in the early stages, the internal prototype appears to focus on integrating image generation tools from ChatGPT into a feed-based interface.

It remains unclear whether the new project will be released as a separate standalone app or built directly into the existing ChatGPT platform. Either route would mark a significant expansion of OpenAI’s product ecosystem, potentially positioning the company to compete with major platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram.

The move could also help OpenAI secure something it currently lacks—real-time user data. Platforms like X and Meta have long leveraged their social networks to gather live information streams, which are then used to train their AI systems. Launching its own platform could allow OpenAI to tap into a similar source of valuable, real-time training data for its models.

According to the report, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been quietly seeking outside feedback on the idea, suggesting that the concept is being taken seriously, even if it’s not guaranteed to see a public launch.

The existence of a working prototype, especially one with social features centered around generative AI, points to OpenAI’s broader ambitions beyond conversational tools and enterprise APIs. While details remain limited and subject to change, the potential integration of a social feed into ChatGPT could reshape how users interact with AI-generated content and each other.

Whether the project evolves into a full-scale social platform or stays internal, it signals OpenAI’s growing interest in user-facing products that extend beyond traditional chatbot interactions.
