OpenAI releases GPT-4.1 to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users for advanced coding tasks

OpenAI has rolled out broader access to its GPT-4.1 model, making it available to users on its ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscription tiers. Initially launched in April as an API for developers, GPT-4.1 is now integrated directly into the ChatGPT interface as of May 14, offering improved performance in programming and web development tasks.

The model can now be selected via the “more models” dropdown menu in ChatGPT. OpenAI says GPT-4.1 is its most capable model yet for writing, debugging, and refining code, showing significant improvements over previous iterations like GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini. According to the company, the upgrade is not just about speed and cost-efficiency—it’s also designed to handle more advanced technical tasks with higher accuracy.

OpenAI has indicated that the model will also roll out soon to ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users. This phased release aligns with OpenAI’s broader model reshuffle, which recently included retiring the original GPT-4 and deprecating GPT-4.5. GPT-4.1 is now positioned as the fastest and most cost-effective option in OpenAI’s suite, with a knowledge base updated through June 2024.

The company has already partnered with organizations such as Windsurf, Qodo, Hex, Blue J, Thomson Reuters, and Carlyle to test and deploy GPT-4.1 in commercial settings via its API. These collaborations are part of OpenAI’s ongoing strategy to integrate AI models into specialized business and development workflows.

In addition to the premium-tier expansion, OpenAI has made GPT-4.1 mini the new default fallback model for all ChatGPT users—including free-tier users—once GPT-4o usage limits are reached. It is also available in the “more models” menu for those on paid plans. This change underscores OpenAI’s intent to streamline its offerings while maintaining access to lighter, cost-conscious versions of its flagship models.

Pricing for ChatGPT subscriptions varies: ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month for individual users, while the Pro plan is priced at $200 per month and is aimed at power users and professionals. The Team plan, designed for collaborative work environments, costs $25 per user per month with an annual commitment.

As AI adoption accelerates in technical fields, the rollout of GPT-4.1 to a broader user base signals OpenAI’s focus on making high-level coding support more accessible, especially to individual developers and small teams who previously only had API-based access.
