Nikon makes big move in filmmaking, acquires RED Digital Cinema

In a major shakeup for the industry, Nikon has acquired RED Digital Cinema, the innovative camera company founded by Oakley’s Jim Jannard. RED is renowned for its cutting-edge digital cinema cameras, the RED One 4K and V-Raptor X, which have graced the sets of blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Captain Marvel, along with acclaimed shows like Squid Game and others.

This acquisition signals Nikon’s ambitious entry into the professional filmmaking market. The deal will see RED become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nikon, potentially bringing together RED’s cinematic expertise with Nikon’s imaging prowess.

Nikon said, the strategic alliance between Nikon and RED is all about delivering unmatched filmmaking tools for customers. By combining Nikon’s strengths in reliable product development, image processing, optics, and user interfaces with RED’s expertise in cutting-edge cinema cameras, compression technology, and color science, the future of professional digital cinema cameras looks groundbreaking.

The deal comes less than a year after RED’s lawsuit against Nikon over alleged patent infringement was dismissed. RED’s past includes an unsuccessful foray into smartphones with the RED Hydrogen One.
