After a series of delays and public concerns over privacy, Microsoft has begun rolling out Windows Recall for Copilot+ PCs as part of its April 2025 update. Initially unveiled in mid-2024, the feature quickly attracted scrutiny over how it handled user data, prompting Microsoft to postpone its release while reinforcing security protocols. Now, Recall is arriving on devices powered by Snapdragon, Intel, and AMD processors, with a phased deployment expected over the coming weeks.
Windows Recall functions by capturing encrypted snapshots of users’ on-screen activity, storing the data locally. The feature is designed to help users revisit previously viewed content without relying on cloud storage. To address earlier criticisms, Microsoft has built in privacy controls that allow users to exclude specific apps and websites from being recorded or to manually delete snapshots when needed. Access to this history is gated through Windows Hello, using biometric authentication like facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, or PIN codes, aiming to ensure that only authorized users can review the stored information.
Alongside Recall, Microsoft is introducing additional AI capabilities intended to enhance everyday use of Copilot+ PCs. One of these is Click To Do, a system-wide overlay that builds on Recall’s foundations. By pressing the Windows key and clicking with the mouse, users can interact directly with text and images on screen—editing, copying, summarizing, or rephrasing content without switching between apps. The feature is intended to simplify common tasks and improve workflow efficiency by offering context-aware shortcuts.
Another notable update is a revamped Windows Search powered by AI. This enhancement enables users to search for files, apps, and settings using natural language, rather than relying on precise file names or keywords. The improved search functionality is integrated across the operating system, including the search panel, Settings app, and File Explorer, aiming to make navigation more fluid and user-friendly.
While the new features are being distributed through the April 2025 preview update, access will initially be limited. Users eager to test them early can opt into the latest updates via the Windows Update settings. However, availability in Europe will be delayed until later in the year as Microsoft seeks additional regulatory approvals.
