Just days after Apple’s landmark announcement about opening up the iOS App Store in the EU, MacPaw, a software developer, has made waves by declaring its intention to launch the first alternative app store for iPhone later this year.
In a press release, MacPaw expressed both optimism about the upcoming changes and a long-held anticipation for such a move. While acknowledging that the road to a truly competitive iOS market remains under construction and long, MacPaw boldly steps forward as the first company to confirm bringing an alternative marketplace to iPhone users in the EU.
With beta testing already in its final stages and a 2024 launch targeted, MacPaw said it is actively engaging with its cross-platform developers to bring their apps to the iPhone storefront. Additionally, they’re collaborating with leading mobile app developers, aiming to further diversify the marketplace offerings.
This bold move by MacPaw follows Apple’s recent confirmation of opening up iOS app distribution in the EU, a response to the upcoming Digital Markets Act. This act mandates compliance by March 7th, prompting Apple to loosen restrictions on app distribution, browsers, and even allow cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now on iPhone.
