Instagram is expanding how users interact with short-form video by launching Blend, a new feature that curates a daily personalized Reels feed shared between friends. The feature, which can be activated through one-on-one or group direct message (DM) chats, allows users to invite others into a shared viewing experience. Once someone accepts a Blend invite, the group receives a constantly updating feed tailored to the interests of everyone involved.
Blend offers a social twist to content discovery. Users won’t just scroll through random Reels anymore; instead, they’ll explore content selected with their friends’ tastes in mind. The feed refreshes daily, keeping things current and encouraging return visits. When someone reacts to a reel, others in the chat are notified, opening the door for ongoing conversation right in the DMs. This added layer of interaction helps Blend feel more like a shared experience than passive scrolling.
The feature seems positioned to bring a more friend-focused approach back to Instagram, something that’s taken a backseat as the platform’s content strategy has leaned more into algorithm-driven recommendations and influencer-driven media. With Blend, the emphasis shifts toward tighter-knit circles and shared interests.
Using Blend is straightforward. You start by opening a DM chat, either with a single friend or a group, and tap the new Blend icon at the top of the screen. From there, you can invite people from that chat. Once someone accepts, the Blend activates and starts generating content for everyone. The shared feed can always be accessed by tapping the Blend icon in the chat.
While Blend may remind some users of Spotify’s feature with the same name — which merges friends’ music tastes into a collaborative playlist — Instagram’s version is all about short-form video. It’s also a notable differentiator from TikTok, which doesn’t currently offer a shared feed option between friends.
For Instagram, Blend adds another layer of engagement to Reels, potentially increasing watch time and encouraging users to explore content as a group. And for users, it introduces a new way to stay connected through videos tailored to shared preferences.
