HONOR 400 Series puts AI-powered mobile photography in focus with 200MP camera

Smartphone photography continues to evolve, and the upcoming HONOR 400 series reflects how AI is becoming increasingly central to that progression. Set to include the HONOR 400 and HONOR 400 Pro, this latest lineup brings a suite of AI-driven imaging features aimed at users who rely heavily on their mobile devices for both content creation and everyday photography. While the marketing highlights a “transformative” leap, the hardware and software changes tell a more nuanced story of refinement and ambition.

At the heart of the HONOR 400 is a 200MP main camera, built on a 1/1.4-inch sensor with f/1.9 aperture and dual stabilization via OIS and EIS. This combination is geared toward improving image clarity, particularly in low-light scenarios. The camera system is supported by HONOR’s proprietary image engine, which uses AI to optimize results. One of the more unusual additions is the ability to shoot up to 30x zoom using the main sensor—a range typically reserved for telephoto lenses. Branded here as “AI Super Zoom,” the feature targets users looking to capture distant subjects like cityscapes or landscapes without reaching for a secondary lens.

The series also introduces several AI tools designed to help users edit photos and generate video content directly on the device. These include “AI Erase,” which automatically removes background distractions like passers-by, and “AI Image to Video,” a new feature co-developed with Google Cloud that turns still images into short video clips using Google’s Veo AI model. These videos can be output in standard formats and aspect ratios suitable for social sharing. For a limited period, HONOR is offering two months of free access to this tool, capped at ten uses per day.

Another editing feature, “AI Upscale,” is positioned to help restore older or damaged photos by cleaning up visual noise and enhancing resolution. Meanwhile, the “HD Moving Photo” and “Moving Photo Collage” features let users turn live photo bursts into brief cinematic moments, including the ability to stitch multiple moving photos into a single frame for more expressive storytelling.

Outside of photography, the HONOR 400 series includes hardware upgrades that support long-lasting daily use. A 6000mAh battery paired with 100W fast charging is likely to appeal to users who value endurance and minimal downtime. The display, rated at 5000 nits peak brightness, suggests strong visibility in outdoor conditions, though real-world performance will determine how meaningful that number is beyond the spec sheet.

Design-wise, the standard HONOR 400 will come in four colors—Midnight Black, Meteor Silver, Desert Gold, and Tidal Blue—while the Pro variant adds a Lunar Grey option. While pricing hasn’t been formally disclosed, HONOR plans to open pre-orders soon, bundled with promotional gifts to attract early buyers.

The HONOR 400 series is not likely to revolutionize smartphone photography as the marketing might suggest, but it does represent a calculated push toward deeper integration of AI in both image capture and content creation. Whether these tools become widely used or remain niche curiosities will depend on how well they’re executed in practice—and how users respond once the devices are in hand.
