Google I/O 2025: where to watch and what to expect from Gemini, Android XR, and AI-powered futures

May 20

Google I/O 2025 kicks off this Tuesday, May 20, with the tech world turning its attention to Mountain View, California, where the company will host its annual developer conference at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. Once a launchpad for Android phones and Pixel hardware, I/O has steadily evolved into a platform for Google to showcase its ever-deepening investments in artificial intelligence, and this year is no exception.

The event will begin with a keynote on May 20 at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET, livestreamed globally via YouTube. This will be followed by a developer keynote at 1:30 p.m. PT / 4:30 p.m. ET, which will dig deeper into how Google’s growing Gemini ecosystem is transforming developer workflows, user interfaces, and productivity tools across Android, Chrome, the web, and beyond.

Although I/O is still billed as a developer conference, its relevance extends to anyone watching how Google plans to evolve its core products—and increasingly, how it’s repositioning itself in a world driven by generative AI. Like last year, Gemini will take center stage, not only as a chatbot but as a foundational layer for software experiences across Google’s ecosystem. Expect demonstrations of Gemini’s integration into Google Workspace, Android, Search, and developer tools, with real-time collaboration and productivity enhancements powered by multimodal AI.

Android 16 is unlikely to get major time on stage this week, as its Material 3 Expressive redesign has already been revealed. Hardware announcements like the Pixel 10 or a new Pixel Fold are also off the table, as Google shifts these product reveals to standalone events in the fall. That makes this I/O more of a strategic software showcase than a traditional gadget drop.

However, one area of potential surprise is Android XR, Google’s framework for extended reality. With Meta currently dominating the conversation around wearable AR with its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, all eyes are on Google to respond. A prototype or early look at Google’s next-gen AR glasses—possibly a counter to Meta’s efforts—is not out of the question. This would align with Google’s broader ambition to build out ambient computing experiences that extend beyond phones and laptops.

Attendees and viewers can also expect a full schedule of technical sessions covering Google Cloud, Chrome, Google Play, Android development, and Gemini APIs, many of which will be available to stream online. The I/O 2025 website provides the full agenda for those looking to dive into specific topics.

While this year’s event may not deliver headline hardware, the deepening of AI integration across platforms, renewed focus on developer tooling, and hints at Google’s augmented reality strategy make it a pivotal moment in the company’s roadmap.

For those interested in the future of AI-powered devices and Google’s vision for its next era of platforms, Google I/O 2025 is worth the watch—even without a new Pixel in sight.
