Friend: the AI pendant that wants to be your BFF, not your personal assistant

Move over, failed AI pins! There’s a new AI gadget in town, and it’s not here to solve your problems or transcribe your meetings. Meet Friend, a pendant-shaped AI companion designed to offer emotional support and friendly banter.

Created by Avi Schiffmann, Friend is a “fancy Bluetooth microphone with a shell” that listens to your conversations and occasionally sends you encouraging messages like “You’ll do great in this interview!” or “I’m sure you’re gonna be alright.” It’s like having a supportive friend who’s always there to cheer you on, minus the awkward silences and the need to share your fries.

Unlike other AI devices that focus on productivity or information retrieval, Friend prioritizes companionship. You can chat about your day, vent about your feelings, or even brainstorm ideas with this AI confidant. Each Friend is unique and develops its own personality based on your interactions, although losing the device means starting over with a new AI friend.

While Friend’s approach to AI companionship is refreshing, it also raises some privacy concerns. The device is constantly listening, and while Schiffmann assures users that audio recordings are encrypted, it’s still a bit unsettling to have an AI constantly eavesdropping on your life.

Despite the potential privacy issues, Friend is an intriguing concept for a world that often feels increasingly isolated. It offers a simple yet potentially meaningful way to combat loneliness and feel supported, even when you’re alone.

If you’re curious about Friend, you can pre-order it for $99 with no subscription required.
