CES 2024: Rabbit R1, the tiny AI companion that wants to rethink your smartphone relationship

CES 2024 witnessed the birth of a curious little gadget that aims to reshape our relationship with smartphones. The Rabbit R1, unveiled by AI startup Rabbit, isn’t a phone replacement, it’s a rebellion against the black rectangle’s digital dominion. Imagine a pocket-sized, voice-activated assistant that handles the majority of your daily tasks, liberating you from the endless scroll and notification purgatory (or so they say). That’s the Rabbit R1.

Forget sleek displays and touchscreens. The R1 is an unassuming, ergonomic capsule, reminiscent of a retro-futuristic walkie-talkie. Its primary interface is a single button and a microphone. Yes, you heard that right. Rabbit is betting on the power of voice interaction to navigate the complexities of our digital lives.

Underneath the minimalist exterior lies a powerhouse of AI. Powered by a Large Action Model (LAM), the R1 learns your habits and preferences, enabling it to perform complex tasks. Imagine a world where you simply say “Book me a ride to the Apple Store” and the R1 handles the entire process, from placing the booking on Uber to confirming payment.

The R1 integrates seamlessly with popular services like Spotify, Uber, and even Photoshop. Say “Play my workout playlist on Spotify,” and the R1 takes care of it. And yes, the R1 can even navigate multi-step tasks within complex apps, like editing photos in Photoshop with simple voice commands.

Unlike most AIs, the company says, the R1 prioritizes personalization. You teach it how you like things done, not the other way around. The more you use it, the smarter it becomes, understanding your nuances and anticipating your needs.

The price tag is set at $199, and the company has already sold more than 10,000 units in just one day of the launch.
