Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2nd gen headphones add USB-C audio and cinema mode

Bose has refreshed its flagship over-ear lineup with the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), two years after the first version impressed critics with some of the best active noise cancellation (ANC) on the market. The new model keeps the familiar design but introduces several upgrades aimed at audio quality, connectivity, and overall usability.

One of the most notable additions is USB-C audio support, allowing for wired playback with laptops, phones, and digital audio players. This unlocks lossless playback up to 16-bit/48kHz and reduces latency—making the headphones more appealing for gamers as well as audiophiles.

ANC performance has also been refined. Bose says the 2nd Gen model delivers clearer highs, deeper bass at higher volumes, and an improved version of its ActiveSense algorithm that adapts noise cancellation more precisely to each listener. These changes are subtle but intended to make long sessions sound more natural and less fatiguing.

A new Cinema Mode has been added under the Immersive Audio suite. It adjusts background sound levels and boosts dialogue clarity, making movies, TV shows, and even podcasts easier to follow. This feature will also roll out to the 2nd Gen QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds via software update.

Battery life gets a bump as well: up to 45 hours of playback with ANC off, 30 hours with ANC on, and 23 hours with Immersive Audio active. That’s competitive with Sony’s WH-1000XM6 and better than Apple’s AirPods Max.

Aesthetic options have expanded, too. Alongside the standard Black and White Smoke, Bose is offering two limited-edition colors: Driftwood Sand, with a cream-and-brown finish, and Midnight Violet, a striking purple variant.

Pricing remains unchanged at $429, with sales opening September 10. Meanwhile, the first-gen model has already seen price drops, making it a potentially strong value if you don’t need the latest refinements.

Bose is clearly positioning the QuietComfort Ultra 2nd Gen as an incremental but meaningful upgrade. Between USB-C audio, smarter ANC, and Cinema Mode, it’s less about reinventing the headphones and more about keeping its edge in a fiercely competitive market where Sony and Apple continue to push hard.
