Bluesky adds long-form content support via AT protocol

Bluesky has taken another step toward expanding beyond its microblogging roots by integrating support for long-form content through a partnership with Standard.site, a community-driven project built on the same AT Protocol that underpins the platform. Announced on May 28, the update allows users to discover and engage with articles, blog posts, and newsletters from across the broader “Atmosphere” of AT Protocol-compatible apps, including Leaflet, pckt, and Offprint. These publications target independent writers seeking greater ownership and distribution outside traditional social media constraints.

For now, the content surfaces as enhanced link previews rather than fully native embeds, with Bluesky describing it as an initial implementation that will evolve. This marks the second notable expansion drawing on external community tools. Earlier this year, a startup called Germ enabled private messaging directly from within the Bluesky app, highlighting the platform’s strategy of leveraging third-party developments on its decentralized infrastructure.

The move aligns with Bluesky’s broader vision of an open social web, where data moves freely between applications and users can switch personal data servers without losing access. Recent developments, such as WordPress’s plugin that publishes sites directly to the AT Protocol using Standard.site’s lexicon records, further this idea. Unlike simply sharing links, these integrations make content natively readable across compatible clients. This contrasts sharply with more closed platforms, where long-form features often remain locked within their ecosystems.

Yet the practical impact remains to be seen. Bluesky has grown to around 44.5 million registered users, a respectable figure for a relatively young decentralized network, but it pales in comparison to established competitors. For context, X reports over 550 million monthly active users, giving it unmatched distribution power even for its subscriber-only Articles feature. Bluesky’s approach prioritizes openness and user control, appealing to those frustrated with centralized moderation and data ownership issues, but it faces the classic challenge of decentralized platforms: building critical mass without the network effects that drive mainstream adoption.

In a social media landscape still dominated by short attention cycles, adding long-form capabilities could help Bluesky attract creators and readers seeking substance over virality. However, success depends on execution. Dynamic previews are a modest start, and sustained engagement will require smoother integration, better discovery tools, and genuine incentives for quality writing. The platform must also navigate moderation complexities as richer content flows in, especially with expanded account-level labeling now available in version 1.122 alongside minor fixes like an improved GIF picker and photo viewer.

Overall, Bluesky continues carving out a distinct identity by fostering an interconnected ecosystem rather than competing directly on scale or spectacle. Whether this leads to meaningful shifts in how people consume online writing or remains a niche experiment will depend on how effectively the open protocol delivers tangible advantages over more familiar, if restrictive, alternatives.
