Apple’s CarPlay Ultra rolls out: what drivers can expect from the next-gen interface

Apple’s newest evolution of in-car connectivity, CarPlay Ultra, is beginning its rollout today, first appearing in new Aston Martin vehicles across the U.S. and Canada. Designed to offer deeper integration between iPhone and vehicle systems, the platform expands on the original CarPlay interface with a more comprehensive and customizable user experience. A software update enabling CarPlay Ultra will also be available in the coming weeks for existing Aston Martin models equipped with the brand’s latest infotainment system.

Unlike the standard CarPlay setup, which largely mirrors iPhone functionality onto a central screen, CarPlay Ultra extends across all of the driver’s digital displays—including the instrument cluster. This integration allows real-time information from both the iPhone and the vehicle itself to be displayed side by side, including data such as speed, fuel level, navigation, media controls, tire pressure, and driver assistance features.

Users can interact with the system via touch, physical controls, or Siri voice commands, offering a mix of convenience and safety depending on driving conditions. Vehicle functions such as climate control, audio settings, and even performance features can be accessed through the CarPlay Ultra interface, effectively consolidating multiple in-car systems into one cohesive dashboard experience.

CarPlay Ultra also includes widget support, optimized to fit each display layout within the vehicle. These widgets are powered by the iPhone and designed to deliver at-a-glance updates—like weather, calendar events, or now playing info—without distracting from the road.

One key differentiator for CarPlay Ultra is its ability to reflect the visual identity of each automaker. Apple has worked directly with manufacturers to allow custom themes and layouts that align with each brand’s styling preferences. Drivers can further personalize these themes by choosing colors and wallpapers, though the structure remains anchored in Apple’s broader design ecosystem.

Aston Martin is the first automaker to bring CarPlay Ultra to market, but Apple notes that Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are among other manufacturers planning to implement the system in future models. The technology is compatible with iPhone 12 and newer devices running iOS 18.5 or later.

As with previous versions of CarPlay, CarPlay Ultra maintains Apple’s existing privacy framework, keeping personal data and app activity secured under the same protections found on the iPhone.

CarPlay Ultra is now available in new orders of Aston Martin vehicles in North America, and its availability is expected to expand globally within the next year. Owners of compatible Aston Martins can expect the software update to be delivered through local dealerships in the near future.
