Apple simplifies account management with purchase migration feature

Apple has quietly rolled out a new feature that allows users to consolidate their digital purchases across multiple Apple IDs. This new functionality addresses a long-standing frustration for users who have found themselves juggling separate accounts for iCloud and media purchases. Now, it’s possible to migrate purchased apps, music, books, TV shows, and movies from one Apple ID to another.

Apple has published a support document outlining the steps involved in this process. Essentially, users can transfer purchases from a secondary account to a primary account, streamlining their digital library under a single login. This is particularly useful for those who, for various reasons, have maintained separate Apple IDs for different services.

The migration process requires users to have access to the primary email address, phone number, and password for both accounts. Two-factor authentication must also be enabled on both accounts. Importantly, Apple stipulates that neither account should be shared with others. During the transfer, the Apple ID used for iCloud becomes the primary account, while the one used for media purchases is designated as the secondary account.

To initiate the transfer, users must sign in with two different Apple IDs on an iPhone or iPad – one for iCloud and the other for purchases. Several prerequisites must be met, including ensuring both accounts are set to the same country and that the secondary account has no remaining balance. Apple provides a detailed checklist and information on the migration process, including how to undo it, which users should review carefully before proceeding.

The actual migration is initiated through the Settings app. Users navigate to Media and Purchases, tap View Account, and then select the Migrate Purchases option. After the transfer, the secondary account can no longer be used for purchases, requiring users to sign in with their primary Apple ID on all Apple devices.

When consolidating accounts, all payment methods associated with the secondary account are moved to the primary account, and subscriptions are also transferred. Additionally, the secondary account’s Up Next queue in Apple TV and any podcast library data will be migrated, potentially overwriting existing data on the primary account.

It’s worth noting that this feature is not currently available in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or India. Apple has not provided a timeline for when or if it will be rolled out in these regions.
