Apple’s much-anticipated Image Playground, an AI feature set to debut in iOS 18.2, is making its first public appearance, courtesy of Wired. The publication shared a delightful example of the technology in action, showcasing a charming illustration crafted by none other than Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior VP of software engineering.
The heartwarming image, created as a birthday surprise for Federighi’s dog Bailey, depicts the pup sporting a festive party hat and beaming behind a birthday cake. It’s a testament to the playful and personalized creations Image Playground can generate.
Image Playground, set to roll out in December alongside iOS 18.2, promises to add a dash of fun and creativity to Apple’s suite of apps. Users will have the power to conjure original images within seconds, using simple text descriptions, suggested concepts, or even photos from their personal library. The generated images can be further customized to fit seamlessly into various contexts, from Messages conversations and Freeform boards to Keynote presentations.
This feature is just one facet of Apple’s broader AI initiative, Apple Intelligence. With the upcoming iOS 18.1 release, users can expect a slew of other AI-powered tools, including writing aids, notification summarization, and enhanced call recording capabilities. The Photos app is also getting a boost with a new “Clean Up” tool that seamlessly removes unwanted elements from images.
