Apple Music begins rolling out playlist import tool for Spotify and other services

Apple appears to be gradually rolling out a new feature that allows users to transfer their music libraries and playlists from services like Spotify into Apple Music. Though not formally announced, the tool is now referenced in updated Apple support documentation and has started to surface in select regions, suggesting a broader rollout is underway.

The feature enables users to migrate their saved songs, albums, and playlists to Apple Music using an iPhone, iPad, Android device, or through the Apple Music web interface. While the specifics vary by source service, users will still retain access to their original content in the platform they’re switching from.

This playlist transfer function is powered by a third-party tool—SongShift—which has long provided similar capabilities across streaming platforms. SongShift simplifies the process of moving content between services and is now being integrated into the Apple Music experience directly, at least in early tests. The integration was first spotted in beta versions of the Apple Music app for Android, and now appears to be available on iOS devices as well.

Currently, the feature is confirmed to be live in Australia and New Zealand. While this might seem geographically limited, it’s a common practice for Apple to initiate rollouts in those regions due to their time zones. The support documentation is already visible across Apple’s regional websites, pointing to a potential global release over the coming days.

For Spotify users in particular, there are limitations to keep in mind. SongShift cannot directly import third-party or public playlists. However, a manual workaround allows users to replicate these playlists by creating a personal playlist, selecting all tracks from a public playlist, and adding them to the newly created list. This process can be done using the desktop Spotify app or mobile devices.

Overall, the addition of a built-in migration tool helps reduce friction for users considering a switch to Apple Music. While this doesn’t dramatically shift the competitive landscape, it does make Apple’s platform more accessible to those with extensive collections elsewhere—and removes a key inconvenience that may have previously deterred users from making the move.
