AI-powered Enhanced Protection rolls out in Chrome to detect new scams

Scams remain a persistent threat across the internet, with fraud schemes evolving rapidly and often outpacing traditional detection methods. In response, Google is introducing AI-powered protections across several of its key platforms—Chrome, Google Search, and Android—with the goal of identifying threats earlier and alerting users in real time.

In Chrome, Google has rolled out a new “Enhanced Protection” mode, powered by its on-device Gemini Nano language model. Unlike Standard Protection, this upgraded setting uses AI to actively assess websites for signs of phishing and other scam activity—even when the specific threat hasn’t been previously identified. According to Google, this AI-driven approach offers twice the level of protection compared to the default security mode.

The AI works by analyzing patterns and signals from suspected scam sites, enabling it to detect deceptive behaviors and alert users before they engage with harmful content. These capabilities are especially important as phishing tactics grow more sophisticated and harder to recognize by appearance alone.

Google’s use of AI also extends to its core Search engine. The company says it now blocks hundreds of millions of scam-related search results daily—up to 20 times more than before implementing AI-based systems. In some targeted categories, such as airline ticketing scams, Google reports an 80% drop in fraudulent pages appearing in search results.

On Android, additional layers of scam protection are being introduced. One notable update focuses on web notifications, which can be exploited by malicious sites to push fake alerts after users unwittingly grant permission. Chrome on Android now uses AI to flag potentially dangerous notifications, giving users the option to disable them before any data is compromised. These warnings are contextual and appear directly when suspicious activity is detected.

AI tools are also being incorporated into Google Messages and the Phone app, where they monitor for scams that often start with innocuous-looking messages or calls but escalate into high-risk situations. This proactive detection is designed to catch threats that traditional keyword or link-based filters might miss.

By embedding AI across its ecosystem, Google is aiming to stay ahead of scammers who are increasingly leveraging automation and social engineering to bypass standard defenses. While no system can promise total immunity, AI’s capacity to rapidly process vast amounts of data and recognize subtle indicators of fraud makes it a potentially powerful deterrent.

Whether on desktop or mobile, these updates suggest Google is doubling down on using real-time intelligence to improve user safety across its platforms. The success of these features will ultimately depend on how well they adapt to the changing tactics of online fraud.
