The Middle East has always had a soft spot for anime. From watching dubbed versions of “Captain Majid”, “Al Mohaqiq Konan”, “Pokémon” on Arab TV stations in the 80s to bingeing “Attack on Titans” on streaming services, watching anime is a core memory across generations of Arab fans.
It has inspired Arab creators to use the art form for self-expression, incorporating Arab culture and sensibilities within its parameters of character and world-building. With the boom in local anime creation, the lovers of the medium are increasingly turning to Instagram as the platform to show their love for the medium.
With a suite of tools that are extremely well-suited to creating high-quality productions, Instagram is carving a niche amongst anime fans and creators. It currently plays host to a number of talents ranging from culinary, entertainment, cosplay, and makeup through to comics. To date, the hashtag #anime has garnered almost a million followers across KSA, UAE, Egypt, and Kuwait on Instagram!
Regional creators are exploring the full range of the anime universe with manga, cosplay, origami, and folktale anime productions coming together on the platform and redefining the boundaries of the medium through its originality:
- Cosplay: Taking cosplaying to the next level, @paris.ae presents herself as an Emirati Kawaii doll, bringing anime characters to life with great attention to detail.

- Illustrator: From an impressive talent to a small business idea, 20-year-old Reem was able to turn her anime illustrations into a source of income on Instagram. Everything from anime movie characters to fusions of Mirko and Tengen can be found on her emerging storefront @renberryart.

- Manga writer: Qatari manga enthusiast and writer Jassim Al Mohannadi has published 19 chapters of his own manga creations on WEBTOON — under the title Justice in the Wasteland. Jassim has also penned the Middle Eastern manga Primeval. He has said that comics, anime, and manga were the three core factors that played a pivotal role in developing his writing skills. His characters, storylines and depictions are all spiced with Middle Eastern flavors and written in the Arabic language, making it more appealing to the growing Arabic-speaking manga audience in the region.

- Drawing: Jeddah-born Samah Kamel has an immanent love for everything manga and anime and was the first Arab artist to receive a master’s degree in the art of manga from the Arts & Designs faculty at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Samah was inspired by Japanese anime and its culture since she was a kid and grew up watching Arabic-dubbed series, which was the ignition point to her aspiring career. Through her work, she aims to illustrate Saudi culture through contemporary anime drawings and works on meaningful plots with relatable characters and important social messages. Currently the manga editor for Manga Al Arabia, she leads and facilitates numerous workshops covering a variety of manga-related topics.

- Gaming: It is no surprise that anime and video worlds collide. Gaming constitutes a vast sub-section of the Japanese anime culture as anime has long been key to the look and design of videogames. Even though cosplaying while gaming is not a unique concept, Saudi-based avid gamer @6th__kage takes it to another level. He cosplays his favorite character — Kakashi Hataki from Naruto — anytime, everywhere and perfects the look from head to toe!

Commenting on his growing presence on social media, @6th_Kage said: “I started merging both the gaming and cosplaying worlds years ago by cosplaying my favorite anime character, Kakashi, while playing my go-to games and creating content on social media. Ever since, Instagram served as a core medium to uplift my content and connected me with an inspiring community of gamers and cosplayers in the region. Through my work on the platform, I was introduced to a number of anime-centric events, content creators and brands, which opened up new avenues of collaboration and successful partnerships that fueled my growth on social media. The anime industry is getting bigger every day in MENA and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us in the region!”
- Makeup: Truly immersed in the anime culture, @rexchu_tala is the go-to creator to discover parts of anime culture through makeup. Completely embracing anime – whether it’s cosplaying, gaming, food, makeup, arts, or music – she brings the medium to life.

- Retail: Based in Umm Al Quwain, @UAE_animestore is a small to medium business that sells anime action figures, posters, mugs, pop heads, pillows, shirts, and many more items, all inspired by anime shows with global popularity, such as Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, Death Note, and Bleach, among others .

- Shows: Who doesn’t love to catch parts of their favorite shows while they’re scrolling through Instagram? @anime_Arabian curates clips of the most renowned anime shows, both dubbed and original, and shares previews on Instagram to entertain anime enthusiasts.

The success of regional creators can also be attributed to their quick adoption of Instagram’s tools including: Creator lab, an education portal for creators, by creators, which curates lessons, learnings and best practices from Instagram’s leading creators for up-and-coming talent; Spark AR filters, perfect for augmenting anime characters and bringing them to life through easy-to-use templates and asset libraries, to advanced customizations and controls; Reels, a platform to create and celebrate anime by recreating looks, remixing music, collaborating with other creators; and automated captions that streamlines the process of captioning content.
“Expression is at the heart of what we do. We constantly work on giving people the power to build communities, be part of a community, and connect with the people and things that matter to them. Anime has long been a form of self-expression in the region, and we are delighted to witness the incredible Japanese art shaping Middle Eastern creator communities and further making Instagram home to self-expression. We will continue to support creators and arm them with an array of tools and features that make it easier to express themselves and turn their passion into a living,” said Moon Baz, Head of Creators Partnerships, Middle East, Africa and Turkey at Meta.
