1Password rolls out passkeys for Android

GEEK DESK

Android enthusiasts, the passwordless future is here! If your device runs Android 14 or higher, you can now securely manage and use passkeys for fast, convenient logins within many Android apps. This builds on the passkey support 1Password rolled out last year for desktop browsers and iOS.

What are Passkeys?

Passkeys revolutionize logins. Unlike traditional passwords, they:

  • Are always strong: No more risky “password123” situations.
  • Resist Phishing: They’re tied to your device, making phishing attempts nearly impossible.
  • Protect Against Data Breaches: Even if a website is hacked, your private key, the core of a passkey, remains safely on your device.

How Passkeys Work (Simplified)

Behind the scenes, each passkey has a private and public key. Your private key stays on your device, while websites/apps store your public key. When you log in, the site verifies your identity using both keys, making it incredibly secure.

Using Passkeys in 1Password on Android

You’ll need:

  • An Android device running Android 14 or higher
  • The latest 1Password for Android app
  • An Android app that supports passkeys

Getting Started: Easy as 1-2-3

  1. Check Watchtower: This feature within your 1Password app flags which logins can be upgraded to passkeys.
  2. Test-Drive Passkeys: If you’re new to this, try Amazon, Uber, or WhatsApp – they already support passkey logins.
  3. Save When Prompted: When creating your first passkey, the app will likely ask if you want to save it in 1Password. Say yes!

1Password vs Google’s Passkey Solution

Why choose 1Password to manage your passkeys?

  • Cross-Platform: 1Password works on ALL devices and browsers, not just Google’s ecosystem.
  • More Than Passwords: 1Password stores and organizes all your sensitive data – addresses, credit cards, and more!

The Future is Passwordless

Passkeys offer a smoother, safer way to log into your online accounts. 1Password, as always, makes it simple. Not only can you now store and use passkeys across all your devices, but you get 1Password’s industry-leading security for all your important data.
