WhatsApp is stopping ‘unlimited storage’ for backups on Android

WhatsApp and Google have updated their terms of service related to chat backup on Android devices. WhatsApp chat backups on Google Drive will no longer be free and will count against your Google account storage as of next year.

You may now want to revisit your Google account storage if you currently back up your WhatsApp conversations to Drive on Android. Previously, WhatsApp chat history backups made to Drive did not count towards your storage limit, but starting December 2023, backing up the messaging app to Drive will start to consume space. The new changes will roll out in December for beta testers, and to the public from 2024.

WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as you have available space within your Google Account storage. If you hit your storage limit, you’ll need to free up space to resume backups by removing items you do not need.
