Twitter’s Longer Tweets Are Coming This September

About 4 months ago it was revealed that Twitter was looking into having pictures, links and other types of media not count as part of your character limit. Currently, they count as 45 characters in the current 140 character limit, a limit that has seen heated debate over the past year. Earlier this year there were rumours that the limit would be lifted in favour of 10,000 characters, thankfully that was debunked. But lo and behold, Twitter is delivering on its promise to no longer count links and other media as part of your tweet!

A report by The Verge states that the change will come on September 19th, just under a week from now. Furthermore, it has also been reported that “mentions”, Twitter’s way of tagging someone, will no longer count towards the character limit. However, it’s still unclear if all these changes will happen simultaneously on the 19th, or if they will be rolled out in phases. Another great addition will be the fact that you no longer have to put a preliminary full stop in front of a mention when starting a sentence so all your followers can see it.

“One of the biggest priorities for this year is to refine our product and make it simpler. We’re focused on making Twitter a whole lot easier and faster. This is what Twitter is great at – what’s happening now, live conversation and the simplicity that we started the service with.”

– Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO and cofounder

The changes will help Twitter users express themselves more freely, without feeling too constrained while keeping within the concise nature of the social media micro-blogging platform.
