Sonos app update adds Presets and an AI assistant waitlist

Sonos is pushing a substantial update to its app, and the timing is no accident. The company is still rebuilding trust after its 2024 app overhaul. Alongside a handful of quality-of-life fixes, the update lays the groundwork for Sonos 27voice, the company’s new AI-powered voice assistant, which enters early access in the US later this month.

The most immediately useful addition is Presets. You can save a specific combination of music, room and volume level, and pin it to the app’s home screen for one-tap playback. It is the kind of feature long-time owners have effectively been building by hand through favourites and groups, and turning it into a single shortcut makes a multi-room system feel considerably less fiddly.

The bigger story is the assistant. US users can join a waitlist from November 6, with access beginning November 12. The basics cover familiar ground: starting music, shifting playback between rooms, grouping and ungrouping speakers, and setting timers. Sonos claims 27voice can also handle looser, conversational requests. Examples include finding an album from a description of its artwork, or answering a general-knowledge question and then playing the relevant artist in a named room. How reliably it does that remains to be seen once real listeners get their hands on it.

That ambition marks a clear departure from Sonos Voice Control, the company’s earlier assistant, which focused on simple, music-only commands. It also fits the direction Sonos set in September with its Sonos 27 software platform, which lets users connect AI agents to the app. The company says it plans to let users create up to 10 custom agents, although it has not detailed how that will work in practice.

The rest of the update is less flashy but arguably just as important for everyday use. You can now swipe on the Now Playing screen or the mini player to skip tracks, and rearrange your favourites. The app also ties into System Health, an iOS-only feature designed to flag problems in your setup.

All of this sits against the backdrop of the 2024 redesign. That update stripped out features, broke core functions for many customers and became one of the most damaging episodes in the company’s history. CEO Tom Conrad has promised to undo that damage, and steady, practical improvements like these are how that promise gets tested.

For listeners outside the US, including the Middle East, 27voice has no announced timeline yet. The open question is whether Sonos can deliver an AI assistant that feels dependable, rather than another experiment layered on an app that customers have only recently started trusting again.
