Everything you need to know about Apple’s new Gym Strength beta

Apple is taking Fitness+ out of the living room and onto the gym floor. The company has launched Gym Strength in beta, a new strength training feature that builds personalized lifting plans, guides users through each session and logs progress, all at no extra cost for existing Fitness+ subscribers.

The core idea is adaptive programming. Users set their goals, experience level, training schedule and the equipment they have access to, and Gym Strength generates a four-week plan. Each following week adjusts based on the reps and weights logged in the previous one, so the plan should, in theory, grow with the lifter rather than repeating the same routine.

Sessions come in two sizes. A five-exercise workout runs roughly 20 to 30 minutes by Apple’s estimate, while a seven-exercise version stretches to around 45 to 60 minutes. Every workout prescribes exercises, sets, reps and target weights, with short trainer demonstrations that can be viewed from three angles to help with form.

Apple says the library covers more than 350 exercises across over 30 types of equipment, from barbells and cable machines to kettlebells and suspension trainers. The minimum requirement is a set of dumbbells, which makes the feature viable for home setups as well as commercial gyms. Anyone who has waited for a squat rack will appreciate the option to swap equipment or pick an alternative movement targeting the same muscles, along with the ability to add sets or skip exercises entirely.

The feature runs on iPhone or iPad with iOS 27.3 or iPadOS 27.3. Apple Watch support on watchOS 27.3 is optional but lets users follow exercises, log reps and weight from the wrist, and track heart rate and calories. There’s also Training Note, an Apple Intelligence feature that previews workouts, explains progression and flags milestones, though it requires a compatible device set to English.

This move puts Apple squarely in territory occupied by dedicated lifting apps that have long offered progressive overload tracking and adaptive plans. Fitness+ has always been strongest at follow-along video classes, which suit cardio and yoga far better than serious weight training. Gym Strength is a different philosophy: less instructor, more coach.

Fitness+ still costs $9.99 monthly or $79.99 yearly in the US, shareable with up to five family members, and is bundled in Apple One Premier at $39.95 monthly. Whether a beta feature can lure experienced lifters away from established apps remains the real test, and how well the adaptive logic handles plateaus will matter more than the size of its exercise library.
