Jalen Thomas Brooks is heading back to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The actor, who plays nurse Mateo Diaz in HBO’s The Pitt, has confirmed he will return for Season 3, offering a rare piece of certainty about a cast that is already shifting ahead of the next shift.
Brooks confirmed his return while speaking to Collider at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, admitting he knows little about what the new season holds. That secrecy appears to be standard practice on the show, with cast members typically kept in the dark until scripts arrive. He did express confidence in the creative team led by showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, suggesting the series will keep leaning into the socially relevant storytelling that has become one of its trademarks.
His confirmation lands against a backdrop of notable departures. Supriya Ganesh will not return as Dr. Samira Mohan, and Shabana Azeez’s Victoria Javadi is set to take on a reduced role. For an ensemble drama where each season unfolds across a single, punishing emergency room shift, losing familiar faces changes the dynamic considerably, and the arrival of a new intake of doctors and nurses seems likely.
What stands out most about The Pitt is its schedule. The series premiered in January 2025, returned for Season 2 almost exactly a year later, and HBO has already confirmed Season 3 for roughly the same window next year. In an era when prestige streaming shows routinely vanish for two or three years between seasons, that kind of reliability is unusual. Brooks told Collider that the cast is still filming while new episodes are airing, a production rhythm far more familiar from network procedurals than premium cable dramas.
That approach is a big part of the show’s appeal. The Pitt brought Noah Wyle back to hospital scrubs nearly two decades after his long run as Dr. John Carter on ER, this time as the weary Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, and the result became one of HBO’s most significant hits. The first season also won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, giving a genre HBO had largely avoided a surprising level of prestige.
The challenge for Season 3 will be sustaining that momentum while reshaping the ensemble. Annual seasons keep audiences invested, but they also leave little room to recover if a new character or storyline doesn’t land. With Brooks locked in and others stepping back, the real question is who walks through those sliding doors next.
