WhatsApp’s iPhone app is getting a searchable hub for every photo and link

Anyone who has scrolled endlessly through a group chat hunting for a photo someone sent three weeks ago will understand why this one matters. WhatsApp is preparing to bring its media hub to the iPhone, a single place that collects photos, videos and links from across all your conversations instead of leaving them scattered chat by chat.

The feature isn’t new to WhatsApp as a whole. It arrived on Mac and the web last year, where it gathers media, links and documents from every conversation into one view. Code found in iOS beta version 26.42.10.74 shows the iPhone version is now being built, although it hasn’t been switched on for beta testers yet and there’s no timeline for a public release.

On iOS, the hub will sit inside the app’s settings rather than getting its own tab, which tells you WhatsApp sees it as a utility rather than a headline feature. It will be split into two sections: New, for recently received items, and All media, for everything else. Users will be able to filter by photos, videos or links, switch between a list and a grid layout, and tap a heart icon to show only items they’ve reacted to.

Each item comes with the expected shortcuts: forward it to another chat, react to it, star it, or jump straight back to the conversation it came from. The most practical addition is search. It covers photo and video captions as well as links, so you can find something by what it was about rather than trying to remember who sent it and roughly when.

There are some important limits. The hub will only show media you’ve received, so anything you’ve sent yourself won’t appear, and disappearing media is left out entirely. The second exclusion makes sense from a privacy standpoint, since a central archive of supposedly temporary content would defeat the point. The first is more puzzling, and it may frustrate people who want one place to find everything they’ve shared. It’s also not yet clear whether documents will be included on iOS the way they are on desktop, since only photos, videos and links have appeared as filters so far.

The bigger picture is that WhatsApp is slowly turning from a pure messaging app into an organizer for everything that passes through it, a role it has to play as people use it for work, family logistics and group planning all at once. A centralized media view is an overdue part of that shift. The real test will be speed and search accuracy for heavy users with years of chat history, and whether Android gets the same treatment shortly after.
