Dubai startup lets law students face an AI judge before real courtrooms

A UAE legal tech startup is betting that the scariest moment in a young lawyer’s career, the first live cross-examination, should happen in front of an AI rather than a real client. Legaline Platform has launched Meta Legal Space, a virtual courtroom in which law students and trainees argue cases before an AI judge, supported by an AI clerk, witnesses and expert testimony. The company is presenting it as the region’s first AI-powered mock trial platform, unveiled at the Dubai AI Festival at Dubai World Trade Centre on 26 and 27 October.

Mock trials and moot courts are nothing new in legal education, but they depend heavily on available faculty, volunteer judges and classmates willing to play roles. Legaline’s pitch is that AI can fill those seats on demand. Opposing counsel can be either an AI or a fellow student, and the company says proceedings aren’t scripted. Each AI witness is given a background, profession and temperament, with preset levels of honesty, reliability and composure that influence how they respond under pressure. Every witness also withholds one key fact, which the trainee must extract through effective questioning, while answers are designed to stay within the boundaries of the case file.

That last point matters. Generative AI has already embarrassed lawyers internationally through fabricated case citations, so keeping witnesses anchored to set material is essential if the tool is to teach rather than mislead.

Before each session, users select whether the hearing runs as litigation, arbitration or mediation, and whether it follows UAE onshore law or the frameworks of the DIFC or ADGM. That multi-jurisdiction structure reflects the UAE’s unusual legal landscape, where civil law courts sit alongside common law-based financial free zone courts. The launch library includes commercial, civil and labour disputes, such as a supply contract breach, a construction defects claim and an unfair dismissal case before the DIFC Small Claims Tribunal. Legaline says cases are written by practising lawyers rather than generated from templates, and each is graded by difficulty and length.

Sessions end with a performance report covering argumentation, procedural compliance and handling of objections, plus a leaderboard. A licensed practitioner from Legaline’s network can also step in as judge and score live. Registration is free for students, and the platform is being offered to law schools and training providers across the region. It sits alongside Legaline’s existing AI tutor, research assistant and contract drafting tools.

The open question is how far an AI judge’s rulings and scoring can be trusted as a training benchmark, and whether law schools will see Meta Legal Space as a supplement to traditional advocacy training or a substitute for scarce courtroom practice.
