Apple now lets you fix your iPhone 18 Pro yourself, cheaply

Cracked your new iPhone 18 Pro already? Apple will now sell you the parts to fix it yourself, and some of the prices are more reasonable than you might expect.

The company has added the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to its Self Service Repair Store, offering a broad catalogue that covers displays, batteries, rear and front cameras, back glass, enclosures, logic boards, speakers, the main microphone, SIM trays and Taptic Engines. Each part is listed alongside the tools the job demands, from suction cups and nylon probes to adhesive cutters and torque drivers, all of which can be bought individually.

Pricing tells an interesting story. The rear camera module costs $249, identical to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, despite the new models adding a variable aperture system. Return the old unit and Apple applies a $59.76 credit, bringing the real cost to $189.24. Batteries are $129 on both phones, and a $61.92 credit drops that to $67.08, making a battery swap one of the most sensible DIY jobs here. The Pro Max battery, however, is still listed as coming soon.

Displays are where the maths turns less friendly. A new screen costs $329 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $379 for the Pro Max, yet the return credits are just $16.45 and $18.95 respectively. Back glass runs $159 before credit and $120.84 after, while the front camera costs $199, or $151.24 with a return. If you don’t own the tools, Apple rents the full kit for $49 for a week.

The update isn’t limited to phones. Parts for the M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio cover everything from Thunderbolt and USB-C ports to fans, speakers, SSD modules, logic boards and power supplies. The M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini get a shorter list, including fans, speakers, logic boards and power supplies.

Apple launched Self Service Repair in 2022, partly in response to mounting right-to-repair pressure, and has steadily widened it with official manuals and genuine parts in eligible regions. Getting new flagships into the store so soon after launch is a notable shift from the slower rollouts of the programme’s early days.

The bigger question is who this really serves. Swapping an iPhone battery is manageable for confident tinkerers, but replacing a logic board or display still involves real risk, and once tool rental is added, the savings over an Apple Store repair can narrow. For most owners, the program’s value may lie less in doing the work themselves than in the pressure it puts on official repair pricing.
