Apple’s surprise LA launch event may change the Mac forever

Apple’s last big launch of 2026 is starting to come together. The company has invited selected journalists to an all-day product launch experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Apple has not officially confirmed what it will show, but the expected lineup would be one of the biggest changes to the Mac in years.

The main attraction is a redesigned MacBook Pro. Gurman says the 14-inch and 16-inch models will get touchscreen OLED displays, a Dynamic Island and a much lighter body. That would be a big reversal for Apple, which has argued for more than a decade that touch belongs on the iPad and not on a laptop screen, and has stuck to that while Windows laptops added touchscreens years ago. There had been speculation that the new laptops would be called “MacBook Ultra,” but the latest reports say Apple will keep the MacBook Pro name.

The rest of the lineup is more routine. M6 chips are expected in the standard 14-inch MacBook Pro and the iMac. A new iPad mini is also expected, with an A20 chip, an OLED display, a front camera moved for landscape video calls, redesigned speakers, thinner bezels and water resistance.

That iPad mini may also cost a lot more. Gurman has said it will be considerably more expensive, possibly around $799, which would be about $200 more than the current model. The iPad mini has always been a small, relatively affordable tablet. At that price, it would compete with the iPad Air, and buyers who want a compact tablet may wonder whether OLED is worth the extra cost.

One detail is still unclear. Gurman previously said the products would be announced on or around Tuesday, October 27, likely through an online video, followed by hands-on sessions. The invite mentions only the October 28 media event, so Apple could announce the products a day earlier, as it has done before with online launches followed by press demos.

The bigger question is software. A touchscreen needs macOS to work well with fingers, not just with a cursor, and Apple has spent years keeping its Mac and iPad operating systems separate. If the new MacBook Pro arrives with real touch support built into macOS, the line between the two platforms gets much thinner. If touch is just added on top of the existing interface, Apple’s long resistance to touchscreen Macs may turn out to have been justified.
