ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 arrives with OLED and AR glasses

ASUS is celebrating 20 years of its Republic of Gamers brand with the limited-edition ROG Xbox Ally X20, and it isn’t selling the handheld on its own. The X20 comes only as part of a full bundle. Alongside the handheld you get ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a custom dbrand Killswitch case with a kickstand and its own skin, a Pelican hard case with ROG-red latches, and a 68W charger. It works out to a complete portable gaming kit sold as a single collector’s item.

The handheld itself is more than a new colour scheme. The standard ROG Xbox Ally X launched last year with a 7-inch IPS screen. The X20 moves to a 7.4-inch OLED panel running at 120Hz, rated for 600 nits in normal use and up to 1,400 nits in HDR, with Dolby Vision support. Most of the rest carries over unchanged: the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD and an 80Wh battery. The TMR joysticks are designed to resist stick drift, and the D-pad can change shape. The translucent black shell with gold details shows off the internals. At 756g, though, this is not a light device to hold for long.

The AR glasses are the bigger story. They plug into the handheld with a single USB-C cable and use Sony micro-OLED panels at 1080p per eye. ASUS says the result is a virtual screen of up to 171 inches when viewed from four metres away. They run at 120Hz, or 240Hz with Frame Rate Boost on, and have Bose-tuned audio. Follow Mode makes the screen move with your head, while Anchor Mode keeps it fixed in place. Claimed brightness is 700 nits and the field of view is 57 degrees. Wearable displays have been getting better quickly, but how comfortable they are over long sessions is still a fair question. The spec sheet can’t answer that.

Then there’s the price. In the UAE, one of the first markets where the bundle is on sale, it costs AED 10,999, or roughly US$3,000. That puts it far beyond what most people would think of as a handheld budget. ASUS is betting that collectors and gamers who travel a lot will pay for a handheld that turns into a big-screen console on a plane or in a hotel room.

Everyone else will compare it with a regular Ally X and a good OLED TV and come to a different conclusion. The more interesting question is whether the OLED screen and the bundled AR glasses stay locked to this anniversary edition, or show up in future ROG handhelds at a price more people can pay.
