Crunchyroll has picked up the theatrical distribution rights for Witch on the Holy Night, with the latest TYPE-MOON and ufotable collaboration set to begin its international cinema rollout in January 2027.
The anime fantasy film will arrive first in Saudi Arabia and the UAE on January 21, before expanding across Europe, the Americas and Asia. US and Canadian audiences will get the film from January 29, alongside the UK and Ireland, Finland, Poland, Sweden and India. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are handling distribution, with Japanese-language screenings featuring English subtitles as well as an English dub planned for North America.
Witch on the Holy Night adapts Kinoko Nasu’s 2012 visual novel, developed by TYPE-MOON. The story follows Aoko Aozaki, a high school student secretly training as a Magician while living with Alice Kuonji. Aoko’s carefully divided existence begins to change following an encounter with a mysterious boy, setting the stage for a supernatural story centred on magic, identity and the relationship between its three central characters.
For TYPE-MOON fans, the film is notable for bringing another major Nasu story to the screen through ufotable. The animation studio has a long history with the company’s properties, including Fate/Zero, Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works], the Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] film trilogy and the Garden of sinners adaptations.
That relationship carries considerably more weight today. Ufotable’s work on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba transformed the studio into one of anime’s most recognisable production names, particularly when it comes to theatrical animation. Witch on the Holy Night therefore arrives with expectations extending beyond the existing TYPE-MOON audience, even if adapting a narrative-heavy visual novel presents a very different challenge from Demon Slayer’s action-driven spectacle.
The theatrical strategy is also unusually broad. Following the Middle East debut, the film reaches Austria, Germany and German-speaking Switzerland on January 26, followed by France, Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland on January 27. Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Italy, Australia, New Zealand and several other territories follow on January 28, while Spain and Kazakhstan receive the film on February 5.
Crunchyroll has not yet detailed ticket-sale dates or the precise scale of the theatrical release in each market. With the first screenings beginning January 21, 2027, however, Witch on the Holy Night is being positioned as a genuinely international theatrical release rather than a limited North American extension of its Japanese debut.
