Apple’s first foldable iPhone is forcing iOS to rethink some of its most familiar interface conventions. With the iPhone Duo, iOS 27 doesn’t simply stretch the standard iPhone experience across a larger screen. Apple has redesigned key parts of the operating system around a device that can be closed, opened, rotated, partially folded or placed flat on a surface.
One of the most obvious changes is where familiar controls live. The Dock, Lock Screen buttons and navigation elements can shift to the side of the display, preserving more vertical room for apps and content. Opening the iPhone Duo reveals two Home Screen pages, while the status bar has been redesigned to fit into a corner. Even the Dynamic Island changes orientation, running vertically along the outer display.
More important than those cosmetic changes is how iOS 27 responds to the physical position of the hardware. The interface can move between displays when the phone is flipped, rearrange itself when the device changes orientation and push interactive elements away from the crease when the Duo is partially folded. Apple is also adjusting audio processing as the distance between the device’s speakers changes.
That flexibility gives Apple room to bring proper side-by-side multitasking to the iPhone. Split View can run two apps simultaneously, including separate windows from the same app. Users can also keep Siri AI visible alongside another application and save app combinations for quicker access later.
It is a notable shift for an operating system that has historically treated the iPhone as a single-app-first device, even as iPadOS developed increasingly elaborate multitasking tools. The Duo’s larger folding display finally gives Apple a practical reason to loosen that restriction.
Apple is also using the outer display for features that would make little sense on a conventional iPhone. Duo Preview lets photography subjects see the camera framing, while Kid Cue uses Peanuts animations to attract a child’s attention. Duo FaceTime can extend a call to people standing on the opposite side of the phone, and Smart Take uses the A20 Pro’s Neural Engine to determine when subjects appear ready for a photograph.
Placing the Duo flat introduces another set of behaviours. StandBy can activate on whichever screen faces upward without requiring the phone to be charging, while video controls or a keyboard can occupy the lower portion of the display. A partially folded device can also switch to a split keyboard.
The bigger challenge will be getting third-party software to behave as naturally as Apple’s own apps. Apple has created new developer APIs and is adding iPhone Duo support to Device Hub in Xcode, with Netflix, Zoom and Slack among the early apps adapted for the larger display.
That developer support could matter as much as the folding hardware itself. Foldables become considerably less interesting when applications merely expand into awkwardly shaped phone interfaces. iOS 27 suggests Apple understands that problem: the iPhone Duo will need software that treats folding as a fundamental interaction rather than an expensive screen trick.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, ahead of availability on October 23.
