Sonos 27 is here, and your speakers just got smarter

Sonos is rolling out Sonos 27, a substantial software update that attempts to make its multi-room audio ecosystem more flexible while opening the door to third-party AI assistants. The update is available across Sonos S2 products, although individual features will depend on the hardware being used.

One of the more practical additions is Portable Surrounds. Owners can use a matching pair of compatible portable Sonos speakers, including Move 2 or Sonos Play, as rear surround speakers alongside a compatible soundbar. The interesting part is that those speakers aren’t permanently tied to the home theatre setup. Move them elsewhere and they can return to their normal standalone roles.

That addresses a fairly obvious limitation of conventional surround systems: rear speakers often spend their entire lives fixed in one room. Sonos is effectively trying to make hardware customers already own perform double duty, potentially reducing the need for dedicated surround speakers.

Sonos 27 also introduces redesigned app navigation, with swipe gestures and the ability to pin rooms for quicker access. On paper, this is less exciting than AI integration or flexible surrounds, but it could prove more important to existing customers. Sonos previously faced significant criticism following a major app overhaul, making usability and reliability particularly sensitive areas for the company. This latest redesign appears more restrained rather than another attempt to rebuild the experience from the ground up.

The more ambitious changes are arriving through early-access features. Headphone Linking connects Ace Ultra headphones directly with a Sonos system, allowing audio to move between nearby speakers and headphones without requiring a phone to act as the intermediary. That could make headphones feel less like an isolated accessory and more like another endpoint within a whole-home audio setup.

Sonos is also experimenting with a considerably more open approach to AI. Its Sonos 27mcp feature can connect assistants including ChatGPT and Claude to Sonos. Rather than betting exclusively on one AI platform, the company appears to be positioning its speakers as hardware that can work with multiple assistants. Exactly how useful those integrations become will depend heavily on what users can actually control and how reliably those commands work.

More is scheduled beyond the initial Sonos 27 release. Sonos says its own music-focused Sonos 27voice assistant will arrive later this fall, while Custom Agents are planned for 2027. The latter is intended to let users create agents with their own model, persona and voice.

That makes Sonos 27 more than a routine interface refresh. The immediate improvements focus on making existing speakers easier to use, while the longer-term strategy points toward a home audio system that isn’t dependent on one device, one assistant or even one AI model. The bigger test will be whether Sonos can add that flexibility without introducing the complexity and reliability problems its software has struggled with before.
