Netflix is moving quickly to turn one of 2026’s stranger presidential security stories into a documentary, with Instadocs: The Decoy Plane now streaming as the third entry in the platform’s rapid-turnaround documentary series.
The 29-minute film revisits the unusual July 2026 operation that saw US President Donald Trump secretly leave Air Force One while returning from a NATO summit in Turkey. Instead of continuing aboard the aircraft alongside the traveling press corps, Trump was moved using a catering truck before boarding another plane. Reporters continued their journey without realizing the president was no longer flying with them.
That sounds more like the setup for a political thriller than routine presidential travel, which is precisely why the incident attracted so much attention when details emerged the following month. Beyond the spectacle of a covert aircraft swap, the episode raised an awkward question about what happens to transparency when presidential security demands secrecy.
The Decoy Plane approaches the incident largely through people familiar with presidential travel and the journalists caught on the wrong side of the operation. Interviewees include Reuters White House reporter Gram Slattery and Associated Press photographer Alex Brandon, alongside investigative reporter Carol Leonnig and Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe, who was part of the team that reported the story.
Former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald and former Air Force One crew member Wanda Joell also appear, giving the documentary perspectives from outside the traveling press. The result should provide more context around the mechanics and security considerations behind an operation that initially looked almost unbelievable.
The documentary’s timing is equally notable. In an era when almost every presidential movement is documented in real time, pulling that off may be the most remarkable part of the story.
