A rare overlap of outages across three major generative AI platforms disrupted users on Thursday, with ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all reporting service problems within roughly the same period. The timing is notable, although there is currently no evidence establishing that the incidents share a common cause.
OpenAI’s problems became visible at around 11AM ET, when users began encountering errors while attempting to access ChatGPT. The disruption extended well beyond ordinary chatbot conversations, affecting logins and several of the platform’s increasingly important tools, including file uploads, voice mode, search, deep research and image generation.
OpenAI reported elevated errors affecting ChatGPT and Codex and said it had deployed a mitigation while monitoring the recovery. Some services continued operating with degraded performance rather than returning immediately to normal.
The breadth of that disruption highlights how much ChatGPT has expanded beyond being a simple conversational interface. Features such as research, coding, image creation and file analysis increasingly make these platforms part of everyday professional workflows, which means an outage can now interrupt considerably more than a quick AI conversation.
Anthropic encountered problems at around the same time. Claude, Claude Code and the company’s API experienced disruption, with several models initially listed as affected. Anthropic later narrowed the reported impact to Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Technical staff member CJ Avilla attributed the partial outage to an infrastructure issue, while noting that there was no estimated time for a complete recovery at that stage.
xAI had its own problems slightly earlier, with Grok experiencing an outage across its Android and iOS apps and web service from around 9:30AM ET. Attempts to access Grok through X could produce an overloaded-model warning, while xAI said it was working to restore service.
Three competing AI platforms stumbling during the same window inevitably raises questions about whether there is some shared infrastructure dependency behind the incidents. For now, however, that would be speculation. The available information does not establish a connection between the ChatGPT, Claude and Grok outages, and Anthropic is the only one of the three cited here to have publicly identified an infrastructure issue as the cause of its disruption.
That distinction matters because modern AI services rely on complicated stacks of data centres, cloud infrastructure, networking, model-serving systems and third-party services. Similar symptoms appearing simultaneously do not necessarily mean the underlying failures are related.
Still, simultaneous problems across ChatGPT, Claude and Grok offer an uncomfortable reminder of how quickly generative AI has become infrastructure rather than novelty. Developers increasingly depend on AI APIs, businesses are embedding assistants into workflows, and consumers now expect these services to be available on demand. As that dependence grows, reliability and redundancy may become just as important a competitive measure as model intelligence.
For users caught between three malfunctioning assistants on the same day, switching to the competition was unusually less useful than usual.
