Apple has pushed out the eighth developer beta of iOS 27, leading a wider round of near-final software updates that also covers macOS 27 Golden Gate, iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27. With Apple’s September hardware event just days away, the emphasis now appears to be less about adding features and more about making sure everything is stable enough for millions of devices.
iOS 27 beta 8 is the most significant release of the group simply because of what Apple is preparing for the iPhone. The update puts Apple’s rebuilt Siri at the centre of its software strategy, with the assistant gaining better conversational abilities, personal context, awareness of what’s displayed on screen and deeper control over apps. Siri also gets a redesigned interface connected to the Dynamic Island and a dedicated app where users can revisit conversations.
Apple Intelligence spreads further throughout iOS 27 as well, touching Photos, Safari, Mail, Messages, Phone, Passwords, Shortcuts and Home. Some processing happens locally, while more demanding requests can be handled through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Visual Intelligence is also being more closely integrated with Siri, including through the Camera app.
Away from AI, Apple is refining the Liquid Glass interface introduced with iOS 26. Users will be able to adjust interface transparency, while Apple has also been working on performance improvements covering app launches, Camera responsiveness, Photos loading, AirDrop and transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular connections. Other additions include AI-generated wallpapers, Photos ratings and keywords, custom AirPods EQ options and changes to Apple Pay card switching.
Mac users are getting macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 8 at the same time. There don’t appear to be major new features in this build, which isn’t particularly surprising this late in testing. Earlier betas introduced redesigned window controls, while macOS 27 itself brings the new Siri experience to Mac alongside an AI-focused Shortcuts app capable of creating automations from natural-language prompts. Safari is also gaining a tool for building extensions using prompts.
The rest of Apple’s ecosystem is moving in lockstep. Beta 8 is now available for iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27 and visionOS 27, with these releases similarly expected to concentrate on bug fixes, stability and performance rather than obvious new functionality.
There may still be a few surprises. Apple has historically held back certain software features until its new hardware is unveiled, and watchOS 27 in particular could gain additional watch faces or health-related capabilities tied to upcoming Apple Watch models.
More importantly, beta 8 signals that Apple’s long summer testing cycle is almost finished. Release Candidate builds are expected around the September event, followed by public releases shortly afterwards. At this stage, what Apple doesn’t change may be more important than what it adds: iOS 27’s ambitious Siri overhaul needs to arrive feeling dependable, not like another AI feature that users are effectively being asked to beta-test after launch.
