GTA VI’s 26-minute reveal finally shows what Rockstar has built

Rockstar Games has finally offered a substantial look at Grand Theft Auto VI, and the biggest takeaway isn’t simply that Vice City looks prettier. The 26-minute presentation suggests GTA VI is expanding the series’ familiar open-world formula around two playable protagonists whose relationship could fundamentally shape how missions unfold.

Rockstar Games

The footage centres heavily on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, showing the pair working together during pursuits, shootouts and more scripted sequences. One car chase appears to put Jason in the passenger role, firing at pursuing police while Lucia drives. Another reverses that dynamic, with Lucia behind the wheel as Jason and another character handle the gunfire.

More interesting are sequences where the pair are separated. During one mission, Jason appears to provide security inside a building, using cover while fighting attackers. Lucia, meanwhile, moves through another area more cautiously, attempting to avoid detection. A close encounter also displays contextual button prompts as she struggles with an enemy.

It is too early to know whether these scenes represent genuinely different character-specific gameplay systems or carefully selected mission scripting. Still, Rockstar appears interested in making the Jason-Lucia partnership mechanically important rather than simply using two protagonists as interchangeable avatars.

Beyond missions, the footage reinforces the sheer breadth expected from a modern Grand Theft Auto. Brief gameplay clips show boating, basketball, underwater exploration, racing and parachuting, alongside the return of a weapon-selection wheel. Other scenes feature target practice and exercise activities, while crowded interiors and streets suggest Rockstar is putting considerable effort into making its fictional version of Florida feel densely populated.

Visually, GTA VI is predictably a major step beyond Grand Theft Auto V, a game originally released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 before surviving through multiple console generations. Rockstar says the new footage was captured on PlayStation 5, making the environmental density, lighting and character detail particularly relevant for players wondering what the studio can achieve when it is no longer designing around hardware from more than a decade ago.

The presentation also arrives at an awkward moment for Rockstar. GTA VI has recently been hit by apparent video leaks, which the developer publicly described as “heartbreaking.” Releasing an extended official demonstration gives Rockstar an opportunity to regain some control over how its enormously anticipated game is being seen before launch.

Rockstar Games

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled for November 19, with a starting price of $79.99. It is also set to arrive without a traditional physical disc edition, another sign of how dramatically the console business has changed during the unusually long gap between numbered GTA releases.

After years of trailers, leaks and speculation, GTA VI is finally beginning to resemble a game rather than an internet event. The remaining question is whether all that extraordinary visual detail translates into a more dynamic open world once players are the ones causing the chaos.
