More than two decades after The Passion of the Christ became an unlikely global box-office phenomenon, Mel Gibson is returning to the biblical story with a considerably larger follow-up. The Resurrection of the Christ is now planned as a two-film project, with the first chapter arriving in 2027 and the second following in 2028.
The scale is a notable change from the sequel that had been discussed for years. Rather than simply picking up with the resurrection of Jesus, Gibson’s new films are expected to cover the period between the resurrection and ascension. That gives the story a wider timeline than the 2004 film, which concentrated heavily on the final hours before Christ’s death.
The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One is scheduled for March 26, 2027, while Part Two is set for May 25, 2028. Gibson is directing and producing, with longtime collaborator Randall Wallace involved in the screenplay. Production on the two films began in October 2025, with both shot back-to-back at Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
One of the biggest changes, however, will be immediately visible. Jim Caviezel will not return as Jesus despite years of discussion surrounding his involvement. Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen has taken over the role, while Mariela Garriga will play Mary Magdalene, replacing Monica Bellucci. The wider original cast has also been replaced.
That decision avoids an obvious production problem. More than 20 years have passed since The Passion of the Christ was filmed, while only a matter of days separates the stories on screen. Digital de-aging had previously been considered, but applying the technology extensively across two films would have introduced considerable additional cost and complexity.
The commercial question is harder to answer. The Passion of the Christ earned more than $600 million worldwide in 2004, an extraordinary result for an independently financed, R-rated religious drama. Its success was driven partly by strong turnout from Christian audiences, but also by the enormous cultural debate surrounding its violence, theology and presentation of the crucifixion.
Recreating those circumstances in 2027 will be difficult. The theatrical market has changed dramatically, the original cast is gone, and Gibson remains a divisive figure following controversies that have shaped public discussion around his career. A 23-year gap also means many younger moviegoers have little connection to the first film as a theatrical event.
There is still a sizeable potential audience for a major biblical production, particularly one directly connected to a film that performed far beyond conventional Hollywood expectations. Splitting The Resurrection of the Christ across two movies also signals that Gibson is treating the project as something more ambitious than a nostalgic sequel.
Whether audiences see that ambition as justification for two films will become clearer when Part One arrives in 2027. The original succeeded partly because it was unlike almost anything playing alongside it; its successor now has to prove that distinction still carries weight two decades later.
