WhatsApp is testing a new update management feature for its Mac app that gives users greater control over how often the application receives new builds. The change, currently available to some beta testers, introduces flexible update schedules instead of relying on a single automatic update process.
The feature appears in WhatsApp beta for Mac version 26.30.10.20, where users can choose between receiving the latest available build more frequently or opting for a slower, weekly release cycle. A manual update option also remains available for those who prefer to decide when to install new software.
According to reports from beta testers, the new “Keep up to date” section offers two automatic update choices. The “Latest version” option delivers updates more frequently, including bug fixes, stability improvements, and, in some cases, new features before they reach wider beta releases. The “Stable weekly version” delays updates, bundling fixes and improvements into a less frequent release schedule that may provide a more predictable experience.
Although both update channels include the same core application, the timing of new features differs. Users on the faster release track may receive experimental functionality days before it appears in the weekly channel. That approach mirrors release strategies used by many software developers, where early adopters can test changes sooner while users seeking greater stability receive updates after additional testing.
The new system follows another recent change to WhatsApp’s Mac beta program. Earlier this year, Meta discontinued distribution through Apple’s TestFlight platform for the Mac app, requiring beta users to download preview builds directly from WhatsApp instead. While the change simplifies Meta’s control over beta distribution, it also reduces reliance on Apple’s testing infrastructure and gives the company more flexibility in how it manages preview releases.
Customizable update schedules are a relatively small addition, but they address a common issue for desktop software users. Frequent updates ensure quicker access to bug fixes and new features, yet they can also introduce unexpected issues. Less frequent releases typically offer a more stable experience, making them a practical choice for users who rely on WhatsApp for daily communication and prefer fewer interruptions.
The rollout is currently limited and appears to be gradual. Not every user running the latest beta version has access to the new setting, which is consistent with WhatsApp’s practice of enabling experimental features in stages. Meta has also not confirmed whether the update scheduling options will become part of the public Mac release or provided a timeline for broader availability.
While the feature does not introduce new messaging capabilities, it reflects a growing trend among desktop applications toward giving users more control over software maintenance.
