Tecno will display its Next-Gen Bezelless Concept Phone at the IFA trade show in Berlin this September, a device the company describes as having a true 0mm border. The claim positions it as the first handset to eliminate the final millimetre of visible frame around the display. Whether that measurement holds under independent scrutiny remains to be seen, yet the engineering effort is real enough to warrant attention at a major European electronics event.
For years the industry has narrowed bezels through incremental gains. Early smartphones carried thick frames that doubled as structural support and grip surfaces. Gradual reductions followed, driven by edge-to-edge panels and under-display components. Tecno’s concept pushes further by reworking the internal stack, redesigning the chassis, and adopting new methods of sealing the screen. These steps remove the last visible margin, creating an unbroken glass face that looks closer to a pure slab of display than a conventional phone.
The practical trade-offs are obvious. A complete absence of frame can make a device harder to hold securely and more vulnerable to edge impacts. Manufacturers have long retained slim borders partly for these reasons. Tecno’s solution relies on advanced packaging techniques that may or may not translate cleanly into mass production. The company itself presents the handset only as a concept, stating that the work will inform future generations rather than reach shelves in this form.
September’s timing places the reveal alongside the expected Apple iPhone announcements, including rumours of a foldable model. Tecno already competes in the foldable segment with its Phantom series and has plans for further variants aimed at markets such as India. The bezel-free concept, however, targets a different ambition: maximising screen real estate on a conventional form factor. In regions where Tecno already sells devices the technology could eventually appear in commercial models. Elsewhere the brand’s limited distribution means most buyers will never encounter it.
The visual result is striking in photographs. Without the usual dark border the phone resembles an enlarged version of current flagship designs with the edges erased. The software layer remains Tecno’s HiOS, a familiar Android skin that will not distract from the hardware experiment. Whether the industry follows this direction depends on durability testing, production costs, and consumer willingness to sacrifice tactile grip for pure display immersion. Past attempts at extreme edge reduction have sometimes produced fragile or awkward devices; Tecno’s approach will need to solve those issues if it is to move beyond the show floor.
The concept nonetheless illustrates how far panel and chassis engineering have come since the early 2010s. What once required thick protective frames can now be compressed into a structure thin enough to disappear from view. That progress is incremental rather than revolutionary, built on years of material and assembly refinements. At IFA the phone will serve mainly as a technical demonstration, a reminder that the pursuit of thinner borders continues even as other form factors such as foldables capture more headlines.
